半虚拟语气可表示“客气”及“事发可能性低”等意义,如：
(1) Would you please lock the door behind you?
(2) Could l use your telephone for a while?
这里的过去式语气动词,表示“客气”.
(3) lt might rain this afternoon.
(4) The eyewitness’s evidence could be false.
这里的过去式语气动词表示“可能性低”,也就是对所提的事“存有怀疑”或“不甚确定”.
句子一半为虚拟，另一半为陈述语气；but前句用虚拟而or/otherwise后句用虚拟） (but)
He would put on weight, but he doesn't eat much. (与现在事实相反)
He would have put on weight, but he didn't eat much. (与过去事实相反)

我们考试中常见的虚拟语气是“纯虚拟”的 就是形式上和意思上都是虚拟的 如：
I wish l had made a right decision.
真希望我当时做了正确决定。
（也就是说当时并没做正确决定 也就是“与过去事实相反”）
而“半虚拟”只是在形式上是“虚拟”的 而并没有与事实相反之意
而是表示“可能性” 如：
